목포문학관에는 김우진, 김현, 박화성, 차범석(車凡錫) 문학관을 설치해놓고 있다. 전통적 개성이 뚜렷한 사실주의극을 썼으며 이데올로기의 갈등과 민족분단을 객관적으로 그려냈다. 대한민국예술원 회장, 광화문 문화포럼 회장 등을 지냈다. 사실주의 희곡의 최고봉이자 희곡 작법의 교과서로 꼽히는 '산불', '새야 새야 파랑새야'를 교과서에서 볼 수 있다.
