새팥 Vigna angularis

새팥 Wild-red cowpea. 산녹두, 삼열엽채두, 학명 Vigna angularis 장미목 콩과 동부속의 덩굴성 일년초. 잎은 어긋나기하고 엽병이 길며 3출엽이고 탁엽은 방패모양이며 밀모가 있다.  꽃은 8월에 연한 황색으로 피며 끝에 2~3개의 꽃이 달린다. 꽃받침은 끝에 5개의 톱니가 있고 꽃부리는 나비형이며 용골꽃잎은 2개가 합쳐져서 나선상으로 꼬이고 암술은 윗부분의 한쪽에 털이 있다. 과실은 협과로 흑갈색으로 익는다. 한방에서는 종자를 종기, 이뇨, 단독, 부종 등에 약재로 쓰인다.

새팥은 잎이 달걀형인데 헷갈리기 쉬운 여우팥은 마름모꼴이다. 이와 비슷한 것에 새콩과 여우콩이 있다. 새콩은 꽃의 날렵한 모습이 새와 같고 연한 자주색이며, 여우콩은 연한 노랜색 꽃이 핀다. 돌콩은 아주 작고 귀여운 자주색꽃이다.
