갈풀 Reed canary-grass, canary-reed. 달, 학명 Phalaris arundinacea L. 벼목 화본과 갈풀속의 여러해살이풀. 줄기는 보통 1개가 나와 곧게 자라며 높이 50-120cm이다. 잎집에는 털이 없다. 잎몸은 길이 10-30cm, 폭 5-15cm이다. 꽃은 6-8월에 피며, 꽃차례는 원추꽃차례로 곧추서고 길이 8-15cm이다. 작은이삭은 난형으로 길이 4-5mm이며, 낱꽃 3개로 이루어지는데 이 중 1개만 양성화이다. 외영은 넓은 피침형으로 까락이 없다. 외견상 산조풀에 유사하나 잎이 분록색이고 소수 기부에 기모가 없다. 사료나 퇴비로 이용하며 먹기도 한다. 본초명 역초(鷊草)는 곽란, 당뇨, 이뇨, 중독, 지혈, 홍역에 사용한다.
