쑥 艾 mugwort

 

쑥 mugwort 학명 Artemisia princeps var. 사재발쑥, 약쑥, 타래쑥, 바로쑥, 국화과의 다년초. 키 60~120cm. 꽃은 7~9월에 길이 2.5~3.5mm, 지름 1.5mm 정도인 분홍빛 두상화가 줄기 끝과 가지 끝에서 한쪽으로 치우쳐 달리며 전체적으로 원추 꽃차례를 이룬다. 말린 쑥을 태워 여름철 모기퇴치 혹은 축사의미로 벽에 걸어두기도 했다. 쑥과 마늘은 우리나라 건국신화에 등장하는 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다. 일연이 지은 삼국유사(三國遺事)에 하느님인 환인(桓因)의 아들 환웅(桓雄)이 인간 세상을 다스리기를 원해 태백산 정상의 신단수 아래로 내려와 신시(神市)를 열었다. 이때 곰이 쑥과 마늘을 먹고 웅녀(熊女)가 되었으며 둘이 결혼해서 낳은 이가 단군 왕검이다. 주로 소화기·피부과·부인과 질환을 다스리며, 냉병에 효험이 있다. 본초명은 단오애(端午艾), 애엽(艾葉), 애호(艾蒿), 의초(醫草), 황초(黃草), 향애(香艾)이다.
