감절대는 줄기는 대나무처럼 마디가 뚜렷하고 자줏빛 점들이 보이며 이파리 밑면이 둥근 면에서 호장근과 구분이 된다. 마디풀목 마디풀과 닭의덩굴속의 다년초. 학명 Fallopia forbesii. 높이 1.0-2.5m, 잎은 어긋나며 꽃은 6-8월에 하수오 비슷한 흰색으로 핀다. 열매는 수과로 원형이다
