크로커스(saffron crocus)

 

봄에 피는 크로커스 saffron crocus, 장홍화(藏紅花) , 학명 Crocus sativus L. 붓꽃과의 숙근성 구근식물. 유럽 중남부 북아프리카 중동 원산. 꽃대의 모양이 실처럼 생겼다 해서 그리이스어인 Krokos(실)에서 나온 이름이다. 꽃아랍어의 아자프란(azafran)  또는 자파란(zafaran)에서 비롯된다. 외형은 컵처럼 생겼으며 꽃색은 백, 크림, 노랑, 황금, 라벤다, 자주색 등 다양하다. 봄에 피는 것을 크로커스, 가을에 피는 것을 샤프란이라고 한다. 원예상의 구분일 뿐 모두 샤프란이다. 샤프란은 본래다. 꽃에는 노란 수술대가 3개, 빨간 암술대가 3개인데 암술대를 건조시킨 것을 샤프란이라 하고 이를 향신료로 사용한다. 가격대가 금값과 비슷한 최고급 향신료다. 꽃을 우울증, 타박상 등에 사용한다. 본홍꽃이 피는 나도샤프란(기생란, 나도제비란, 샤프란아재비, 제피란서스, 제피란서스 카리나타)과 흰꽃을 피우는 흰꽃나도샤프란(구슬수선화, 달래꽃무릇, 샤프란아재비, 실란, 제피란서스칸디다)을 흔히 볼 수 있다.
