새우풀 shrimp plant. 학명 Beloperone guttata Brand. Justicia brandegeeana. Mexican Shrimp Plant, 쥐꼬리망초과. 남미 브라질 원산. 키가 45㎝. 줄기 끝에 자주색 반점이 있는 흰꽃을 적갈색 포(苞)가 둘러싸고 있어 새우를 닮은데서 유래한다. 봄부터 여름에 걸쳐 피는데 온도와 햇빛에 따라 그 양이 달라진다. 기부에서 가지가 갈라지고 마디가 굵어지고 반덩굴성. 유사종에 노랑새우풀은 Beloperone guttata=황금새우초(Pachystachys lutea)가 있다.
